Engagement ring advice...?

I just got out of college a year ago. I don't have a ton of money saved up because of my student loans. My girlfriend has said she could care less about the size or cost of a ring, but I feel like I need to get something I can be proud of.

Any advice on this? Where to get a high quality ring? How to do it cheaply? Should I get married if I don't have a lot of money saved up? Is that responsible?

Thanks.Engagement ring advice...?
Ryan...one thing to remember... My Mother didn't have an engagement ring. When she and my father were married nearly 50 years ago, they were young and broke. She wore the plain band which was soon to become her wedding ring during their short engagement. On their 25th wedding anniversary by which time they were posperous, my father presented her with diamonds big enough to take your eye out! Of course she was thrilled but it's the little gold band she treasures. Buy her what you can afford now. It doesn't have to be diamonds, it doesn't even have to be 'real', it's the love and promise which goes with it she wants.Engagement ring advice...?
My fiancee got me a ring made out of tungsten. I like it because it never gets dull looking. Tungsten does not cost as much as other metals. You can always wait for the engagement. If you two are committed and love each other, time shouldn't matter. You can also have a long engagement and get a ring you can afford. You can get married at city hall to avoid the cost of a wedding, and later, you can renew your vows and have a ceremony for that when you can afford it.
She is lying. You must get a diamond at least 1 ct or larger.

Buy round diamond or princess (square cut) diamond only. Square brillant diamonds look like princess cut but are designed to shine better in light.

Round diamonds are easier to get clear/white looking for less money than square diamonds.

Buy a BRIDAL SET it saves you money. It is an engagement ring with matching wedding band for the woman. You propose with the engagement ring and then tell her you have the matching wedding band already.
i don't think having a lot of money matters, marriage is about love and commitment and if she loves you like you love her she wouldnt care about that.. a wedding can be a small get together, the main focus is on you two and important that you two enjoy it and have fun.. and for engagement ring, get a simple setting and focus more on the center stone because you can always reset the stone in the future...
First of all theres nothing wrong with a long engagement (money wise).

There is nothing irresponsible about proposing if you know shes the one and you want to profess that.

Ring.... If she really doesnt care about the material aspect of the ring meaning it doesnt have to be huge and expensive. You could get her a man made diamond. A diamond is a build up of minerals under the earths surface, basically you can now buy diamonds that are genetically modified in lab. They are an 8th of the price and unless you are a qualified jeweler, you would not know the difference.

I live in Australia but i will paste a link for you. Im sure you could find the same where you live.

Good luck and congratulations
Look for a high quality pawn shop in your area if you want to find a great deal on a diamond. Couples do it all the time to save money and I have seen some beautiful rings at very low prices there. Becoming engaged does not mean you have to get married immediately. Take your time and get all of your ducks in a row, then go for it. God luck to you both.
to a women, just the fact of being engaged and the man giving his commitment to her is enough. Just because you are getting engaged doesnt mean you have to get married right away? you can get engaged and save up for a weeding and when you ready, thats when you have your wedding. Zales has pretty nice stuff that arent too pricey? If you are in love and the lucky woman feels the same about you, i say go for it!
get real clear on whether she likes white gold or yellow gold.

Don't buy more than you can afford. Don't go into debt. You can get a high quality decent sized diamond engagement ring that is certified for 500-600 dollars online. 1/3rd ct is .29-.36, 3/8ths ct is .37-.44, 1/2 ct is .45-.58. The average sized ring is 1/2ct, the average color is H, the average clarity is SI1.

Some of these are in the 500 range for a real high quality diamond that is not small. That is a much better choice than a gaudy oversized moissanite for the same price. 1/3 rd ct is respectable. My first ring (we upgraded much later) was .34ct pear and I wear a large ring size, that was a size 8
This might catch me some flack here, but whatever.

Is your girlfriend intent upon getting a diamond? If not, I might recommend a moissanite or diamond simulant. My ring was about $500 for a 1.5 carat princess cut moissanite and I adore it. I didn't see the point in him wasting money on the ring that we could use on the marriage, ya know?
You can always upgrade her diamond when you get a little more money.

And about your money situation, talk to her about the size of her desired wedding and if either of your parents intend to pay for certain things.
Pawn Shops are your best bet. Shop around too because you can really find some deals in them. What's used about jewelry? It's forever something to treasure. And it is always good to save money to spend on other things like the wedding.
Do not buy her anything. Save the money for the beer, cigarettes, and divorce lawyer you will need in the next couple years.
You should only get what you can afford *without* incurring debt.

Dude don't do it!! You are throwing your life away... 50% chance of divorce.. get the cheapest ring possible please don't be an idiot! She shouldn't care about the size of the ring! Material things shouldn't matter if she is a material girl, and you are such an idiot to comply with all her material ';Needs'; then you are an idiot go ahead, marry... you don't need to marry to do this... man you are so naive...
