Need advice on picking an engagement ring?

My boyfriend and I are in the process of picking out an engagement ring. We have found a beautiful diamond, which is a little more than a carat. My confusion comes from which setting to choose.

The first one is a classic six prong white gold solitaire setting. I like the simplicity, the fact that it is exactly in our budget, and the fact that it is classic and can go with a number of wedding rings.

The other is totally different. It is a platinum band with 18K yellow gold scroll work under the central stone and the two side diamonds (which are pear shaped). There is also one teeny diamond in either side of the scroll work that can be seen from the sides, but not looking down on the ring. It is very Victorian or maybe art deco, I don't know, it is certainly a unique ring and I find it really appealing, even though I am usually more of a simple jewelry person. It is more than we had thought to spend, but it is an incredible deal. And we can swing it.

Any ideas?Need advice on picking an engagement ring?
If you have to answer in less than a second--what would you say--go now!

Things to consider...

1) Will the trendy one not be as cool over time?

2) Will you regret not picking the platinum band?

Also remember, you can always buy more rings later and wear them on your ring finger--lots of people have several rings once they get older.Need advice on picking an engagement ring?
you have to try differentt ones on and them drop them and go back,
#1. my SIL has one like that.
#1 sounds like it's the best choice.
I'd go with the second one - if costs are pretty equal for him. White gold needs to be redipped, since it's plated. Platinum and yellow gold look awesome together, and the ring design sounds amazing. However, just ensure that you will be able to find a nice wedding band to fit with it. Sounds like a plain platinum band would be the best.
First, what is the cut of the stone? That's a bit factor in what type of setting your pick.

However, I would go with the first setting. It's more traditional, plus it's a good idea to get a ring with more prongs. Your diamond is little over a carat and it needs to be set more securely in the setting. The more the prongs, the better.

Plus, I agree that the first setting will be easier to match a weddings band to. Plus, white gold is classic.
Does it set up high?

Sounds as if it might, and that

could get caught on things.

Something to consider!
Ah, what a dilemma to have. Which one makes your heart sing?

And I'd like to point out to a previous poster that platinum does have an advantage to some people, in that it is hypoallergenic. I for one get terrible rashes and contact dermatitis from gold rings, but not from platinum. It's worth the expense to be able to wear my rings every day.

But that's neither here nor there.

Have you looked at the stone you've chosen IN each of the two settings? Sometimes a spectacular center stone carries a solitaire setting just fine and a more elaborate one detracts from it. Sometimes it's just the opposite.

Either way, congratulations and best wishes.
I think solitaires are so boring! They really are so everyday, everyone has one. I think the other sounds fabulous! I love the art deco style rings. Here are a couple of liks where you can pick up good semi mounts at reasonable prices:

Overstock has quite a few Taccori rings that have a CZ in the center, you just replace that with your stone:

And another with stupendous prices:

Well...I would look at it like this...do I want the more elaborate ring or could I use that money for an upgrade in photography packages? Or those gorgeous flowers for the reception?

If it's a ring you gotta have, go for it...but think about what that extra cost could do for the rest of the wedding. Or as a down payment on a house. Or for a better honeymoon package!
#1 simple is best
Personally I prefer an antique style setting to a solitare.

However, I am a beliver that platinum is a complete waste of money. You pay a huge markup and get nothing in return. It looks the same as white gold and requires just as much upkeep to stay looking good as the gold....sometimes more. Ask the jewelry store to make the same setting, but instead of platinum have them make it entirely out of gold. That should bring the price down to be within your budget. If it's a chain store that doesn't do custom work simply take pics of the ring to one that does.
I would go with the first described ring. You will appreicate the convinience of being able to shop for a wedding band with ease, plus the fact you'll be able to save more money to put towards the wedding/future home/etc. But that is just my opinion. =)
I go for simple, elegant, and classy jewelry. I guess you can say the plainer the better. I'm not extremely fussy. I just don't like alot of ';business'; when it comes to my jewelry. That being said, you definitely want to stay within what you can COMFORTABLY afford. IF the first diamond is within your means then buy it. You can always change the setting if you wish.

good luck and congrats on your engagement.
I would go with number 1 - but if you can afford platinum instead of white gold opt for that as platinum is much stronger and doesnt need re-dipping each year just polishing.

At the end of the day go for which one you can't stop thinking about.
