I think I've decided on the ring... it's from the jewelry exchange...
The specs are:
Clarity: VS1
Color: i
0.83ct
Is this a good deal? Should I buy it?Diamond solitaire engagement ring advice needed!?
I plugged your stats (.83-carat, color I, clarity VS1) into a diamond search engine called Diamond Price Guru. I picked ';round'; since you didn't specify a shape. It didn't have any exact matches, but there were 8 like this weighing .84 carats. Here's the pricing it found (it checks about 10 different retailers):
Cut grade ';good';: $2,553 to $3,043.
Cut grade ';very good';: $2,515 to $3,080.
Cut grade ';ideal';: $3,070.
If you don't have a cut grade for the diamond you are thinking of buying, maybe you have its measurements, depth percentage, things like that? If so, you can click on the results for the search I was talking about and find which diamond looks most like yours.
Each retailer sets its prices differently. If you are in love with the diamond or are hesitant to buy items online, you'll pay more than those above listed prices--but if it's a LOT more, then I suggest you walk away knowing you can do better.
I hope this helps.Diamond solitaire engagement ring advice needed!?
I would be better able to tell you if it was a good deal if you would tell me the price ;) The Clarity is good on this ring, but the color is not great. I wouldn't recommend anything less than a G color stone. Color is a lot more noticeable than clarity. With an I color, you will definitely see a gray, possibly a yellow, tone. The size is good though, .83 is almost the same width as a 1 carat, and a lot less expense. Diamonds rise in price exponentially at one carat and above.
To make an informed decision more info would be needed, like what is the cost, the cut? How about shape? Is it certified? What are the table/depth, length width ratios? Fluorescence, culet, girdle? What metal is the setting, platinum or gold?
The clarity is better than average as is the size. An average size is 1/2 ct which is .45-.58. Average clarity is SI1-2. The color is below average. Average color is H.
I would prefer taking hits on size and clarity to up that color. Consider VS2, 3/4ct (.69-.82)
I do like buying the off size .83 is 7/8ths carat (.83-.94) but many aren't that size. If a diamond can be stretched to make a 1ct size and sacrifice quality it will be done. I've got a 7/8ths carat diamond solitaire.
We still don't have enough information.
Remember the 6 C's?
Cut ( the most important )
Carat weight
Clarity
Color
Certificate ( AGS or GIA, avoid EGL )
Cost
Is there a certificate? If no, I wouldn't touch this ring.
What is the cut? If it's not *at least* a very good cut, I wouldn't go for it.
The 14K band, is that white gold or yellow gold? If it's yellow gold, I wouldn't go for it. The yellow gold will tend to make the diamond look yellowish. What's the point in having a near colorless ';I'; color diamond and then you make it look yellow with yellow gold? Kind of defeats the purpose of the ';I'; color.
The color, clarity, and carat weight are pretty darn good.

DO NOT go the the jewelry exchange. Please trust me. My ring came from there and it was 10,000 plus and yet it still came out crappy! I had to demand them to fix it and they made it worse! It had to be mailed out to the home store in CA for them to finally make it right. If you arent purchasing from the home store in CA then dont use that company!
Search local small family owned stores in your area. The JExchange does not really have good discounts at all. Inferior work. And the manager was RUDE to me. When I showed her the flaw on the ring and told her that the STORE just did that making the ring worse she insisted I was wrong. And I knew when I dropped off the ring to be fixed it wasnt that bad. They made it worse.
Rude and small store. All a gimmick.
I'd find something with a better color grade as thats the most visible thing really! Check jamesallen.com thats where my fiance and I ordered my diamond from and I got a VS1 E color .53 marquise for less than half the price in any store :)
Hard to know without the price, of course. I know some people say to stick to Gs and above when it comes to color, but my two carat solitaire ring is a J with light fluorescence, and I think it looks great, so YMMV.
yes yes yes!
